Each row spans the deck width; the number of rows is the width divided by one board's footprint (its 5.5 in actual face plus the gap), rounded up. Each row then needs whole boards along the length — rounded up per row, because a single stock board can't be shared across the leftover ends of two different rows. That per-row rounding is why lineal feet PURCHASED (what you buy) is larger than lineal feet COVERING (what actually sits on the deck). Waste is added on top per TimberTech's 10%-15% straight / 30% diagonal scrap-rate guidance.

How This Calculator Estimates Deck Boards

The calculator counts decking the way a carpenter lays it: row by row. It divides the deck width by one board's footprint — the 5.5 in actual face of a 5/4x6 board plus the board-to-board gap — and rounds up to get the number of rows. For a 12 ft (144 in) deck at a 1/8 in gap, that is 144 ÷ 5.625 = 25.6, rounded up to 26 rows. Each row then needs enough whole boards to run the deck length: a 16 ft row filled with 16 ft boards is one board per row, so 26 rows × 1 board = 26 base boards. Adding the 10% straight-layout waste factor gives 29 boards.

The number most calculators get wrong is lineal footage. Per the row-based method, those 29 boards are 464 lineal feet you purchase, while the deck surface only covers 416 lineal feet (26 rows × 16 ft). Those are deliberately different numbers, and the difference is real material you pay for and cut off.

Here is why dividing area by board length undercounts. Take a 10 ft × 20 ft deck surfaced with 12 ft boards. The naive method takes the 440 lineal feet that cover the deck, divides by 12 ft boards (440 ÷ 12 = 36.7 → 37 boards), and adds 10% for 41 boards. But the deck is 22 rows wide, and each 20 ft row needs two 12 ft boards (one full board plus an 8 ft cut) — 22 × 2 = 44 base boards, and 49 after waste. The naive count is short by 8 boards, because it pretends the 8 ft off-cut from one row can finish the leftover 8 ft of another row. It can't: those off-cuts land at the same end of the deck. Counting by the row captures every rounded-up board, which is why the purchased and covering lineal-foot figures are reported separately here.

Gap and waste defaults are material-aware and drawn from the manufacturer's installation guide, not the building code. Per TimberTech, straight layouts add 10%-15% and diagonal layouts add 30%; Trex gaps composite boards 3/16 in. Confirm the gap and joist spacing for your specific product before ordering.

Common Mistakes — Deck Boards

Four errors that turn the right board count into the wrong spacing — or a voided warranty.

Spacing wet pressure-treated boards at their "final" gap

Fresh, soaking-wet pressure-treated boards from the yard shrink as they dry over the first few months. Space them at the 1/8 in gap you actually want to end up with and the gaps roughly double — a 1/8 in gap can open to about 1/4 in once the boards give up their moisture. You bought the right number of boards for the deck, but the finished spacing looks wrong. Fix: butt wet PT boards nearly tight (a fastener-head or thin-shim gap) so they open to about 1/8 in as they dry; only space to a visible gap if the lumber is already kiln-dried (KDAT). Gapping composite boards too tightly

Composite decking expands and contracts with temperature, so squeezing boards below the manufacturer minimum leads to buckling and can void the warranty. Trex calls for a 3/16 in board-to-board gap in all weather, and TimberTech sets a 1/8 in minimum to 3/16 in maximum. Install below that in cool weather and the boards push against each other when they heat up. Fix: use the spacer built into the hidden-fastener clip, or gauge the gap to your board line's published figure — never zero. Stretching the gaps to cover a board shortfall

Run one board short near the end of the deck and it is tempting to widen every gap a hair to make the boards reach. On the 12 x 16 ft deck the calculator counts 26 rows at a 1/8 in gap; padding each of 26 gaps by even 1/16 in shifts the far edge by more than an inch and leaves gaps that look uneven and drop tools and heels. Fix: buy the count the calculator returns (the 10% waste factor is there so you do not run short), and keep the gap consistent — rip the last board to width instead of stretching the field. Landing a butt seam on a single joist or one clip

Where two boards meet end-to-end within a row, both ends must be fully supported — a seam floating between joists, or two board ends sharing a single joist with one clip, works loose as the boards move with temperature. On the default deck the calculator sizes about 325 hidden clips for the interior seams; each butt joint needs its own support so both ends fasten down. Fix: land every seam on a joist, give each board end its own fastener (doubled joist or two clips at the seam), and stagger seams row-to-row so they do not line up in a column. Deck board

The individual boards that make up the deck's wear surface — the visible top layer you walk on, fastened to the joists below. Deck boards are sized and spaced by their actual (milled) width, not their nominal size — see "Nominal vs. actual width" below.

Board gap (expansion gap)

The space deliberately left between adjacent deck boards so they can expand, contract, and drain without binding. Trex's installation guidance sets 3/16 inch as the recommended board-to-board gap for its composite lines "in all weather." Pressure-treated wood typically uses a narrower 1/8 inch gap — about the thickness of an 8-penny nail — since KDAT (kiln-dried-after-treatment) lumber moves less than composite decking.

Nominal vs. actual width

Decking is sold by a "nominal" size that's larger than the board's true milled dimension. A 5/4x6 board — the standard decking size — actually measures 5.5 inches wide once milled, the same actual face width Trex uses across its Enhance through Signature composite lines. This calculator's board-width input defaults to that 5.5 inch actual width, not the nominal 6-inch label.

Waste factor

Board row

One continuous strip of deck boards running the full length of the deck, laid end-to-end when a single purchased board doesn't span the whole run. This calculator counts rows across the deck's width — not just total square footage — because a length-only estimate silently under-counts whenever the deck's length doesn't divide evenly by the purchased board length; every row needs its own board count.

Seam / butt joint

The point where two deck boards meet end-to-end within the same row, needed whenever a board's purchased length is shorter than the deck's full run. A seam should land on top of a joist so both board ends are fully supported and fastened, and seams are typically staggered row-to-row so they don't line up in a straight column across the deck. Confirm minimum seam-to-joist-edge clearance and any recommended stagger pattern in your decking manufacturer's installation guide.

Hidden fastener clip

A composite-decking fastener that clips into a groove milled into the board's edge and screws down into the joist, leaving no visible screw heads on the board's face. "The gaps between my pressure-treated boards opened way up after the first summer."

This is normal shrinkage, not a mistake in your board count. Pressure-treated lumber installed wet dries over the first few months and each board narrows, so the gaps you set at install widen noticeably as the wood gives up its moisture. There is no practical fix short of pulling and re-spacing boards, which is rarely worth it — the deck is structurally fine and drains better. If the wide gaps bother you, the remaining option is replacing with kiln-dried (KDAT) or composite boards and spacing those to their published gap. On the next deck, butt wet PT boards nearly tight so they open to the gap you want.

"My composite boards buckled and lifted in the middle on a hot day."

Buckling means the boards had nowhere to expand — the board-to-board or end gap was too tight when installed in cooler weather. Trex specifies a 3/16 in gap in all weather and separate end-to-end gaps sized to the temperature at install. Fix: back out the fasteners on the affected run, let the boards return flat, re-cut ends if they were butted tight, and re-fasten at the correct gap using the clip's built-in spacer. The deck width rarely divides evenly by one board's width plus its gap, so the last row is almost always a partial width — the calculator rounds rows up for exactly this reason. Fix on an installed deck: pull the last full board and re-rip it so the final two rows split the leftover width evenly (two evenly ripped boards read far better than one full board beside a thin sliver). A butt seam where two boards meet needs both ends fastened — a single clip trying to hold two board ends, or a seam that missed the joist, will always work loose as the boards move. Fix: add support under the seam (sister a joist or add blocking) so each board end lands on solid framing, then use two clips or the manufacturer's dedicated seam/end clip so each end is captured independently. Stagger seams row-to-row so the movement is not concentrated on one line.

"My deck boards squeak or creak when I walk on them."

Squeaks come from a board rubbing against a fastener or the joist as it flexes — usually a loose screw, a clip that was not fully seated, or a high spot on the joist. Fix: find the squeak underfoot, back the screw out and drive a slightly larger or longer one into fresh material, or re-seat the hidden clip. Black or blue streaks around fasteners in pressure-treated decking are a corrosion reaction — the wrong screws are rusting because PT chemistry is corrosive to bare or under-rated steel. Fix: replace the offending screws with coated deck screws or stainless rated for ground-contact PT lumber, then clean the existing stains with an oxalic-acid deck brightener. On composite, use the color-matched screws or hidden fasteners the board maker specifies. Always match fastener rating to the treatment level of the lumber.

"Some of my pressure-treated boards are cupping — curling up at the edges."

Cupping is uneven moisture: the underside stays damp while the top dries, so the board curls. It is worse when boards were installed bark-side down or the deck sits low over damp ground with little airflow. Fix on a cupped board: fasten it down at each joist to flatten mild cupping, or replace badly cupped boards. Prevent it next time by improving ground drainage and airflow under the deck and letting boards acclimate. A finish or sealer on all four sides slows one-sided moisture swings.

"A few boards have a visible up-and-down wave down the length of the run."

A wave usually means a bowed or crowned board was fastened as-is, or it was installed crown-down so the arc reads as a dip. Fix: unfasten the wavy board, sight down its edge to find the crown (the high side of the arc), and re-lay it crown-up so foot traffic and gravity flatten it over time. Badly bowed boards can be sprung into line with a bar as you fasten each joist, or culled to the cut pile. Sight every board before fastening on the next run.

"My boards are checking and splitting at the cut ends."

Small end checks (surface cracks) on pressure-treated boards come from rapid drying, and field cuts expose the untreated core to rot and splitting. Fix: seal every field-cut end with a brush-on copper-naphthenate end-cut preservative — the cut face is the most rot-prone part of a PT board. For fastening, predrill near board ends so the screw does not wedge the wood apart, and keep fasteners back from the very end. Minor surface checking is cosmetic and stabilizes as the board dries.

"I ran short of boards partway through the install — did I miscount?"

Running short usually traces to counting by area instead of by the row: a length-only estimate undercounts whenever the deck length does not divide evenly by the board length, because each row's leftover cannot finish another row. Fix: re-run your real dimensions in the calculator above, buy to the returned count, and add the waste factor rather than trimming it. Save off-cuts for the last partial row.
