Why finish level matters
GA-214 (Gypsum Association) defines five drywall finish levels. Level 4 — the standard for residential eggshell, satin, or matte paint — uses one tape coat and two additional coats over all joints and screws. It consumes approximately 1 gallon per 100 sqft with paper tape. Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the entire drywall surface — required for high-gloss paint, dark saturated colors, or any situation where raking light would show joint telegraphing. It uses roughly 2.5 gal per 100 sqft — about 2.5× more. Knockdown texture is a spray-and-flatten texture over a Level 3–4 base, using approximately 1.1× Level 4 quantities.
Paper vs mesh tape
Paper tape embeds fully into wet mud, creating a stronger bond with less material. Fiberglass mesh tape is self-adhesive and easier for beginners but has holes that require extra mud fill — roughly 25% more compound per 100 sqft. Bucket sizing math
Bucket count is always rounded up — you cannot buy a fraction of a bucket. At Level 4 with paper tape, a standard 4.5-gallon bucket covers approximately 450 sqft. A 1-gallon jug covers ~100 sqft. Sheet × screw math
Screw count uses USG installation guidance (restates IRC §R702.3.5) maximum fastener spacing. On standard 16" on-center framing with 1/2" single-layer drywall: 32 screws per 4×8 wall sheet (16" on-center, 8 rows of 4 screws) and 40 screws per 4×8 ceiling sheet (12" on-center, tighter spacing required by code for ceiling uplift). Sheet count = total sqft ÷ 32 sqft per sheet, rounded up. Ceiling fraction determines the split.
Ceiling fraction — worked example
The ceiling-fraction slider splits your total drywall area between walls and ceilings, then applies the wall-screw rate (32 per 4×8 sheet) to the wall portion and the ceiling-screw rate (40 per 4×8 sheet) to the ceiling portion. The mud and tape rates apply uniformly across both. Worked example for a 1,000 sqft Level 4 paper-tape project at the default 30% ceiling fraction:
- Ceiling area = 1000 × 0.30 = 300 sqft; wall area = 1000 × 0.70 = 700 sqft.
- Ceiling sheets = ceil(300 ÷ 32) = 10 sheets; wall sheets = ceil(700 ÷ 32) = 22 sheets (total 32 sheets).
- Screws = 22 wall sheets × 32 + 10 ceiling sheets × 40 = 704 + 400 = 1,104 screws; round up to a 1-lb box (~225 screws) × 5 = 5 boxes.
- Mud = 1000 sqft × 0.010 gal/sqft (Level 4 paper) = 10 gallons; at 4.5 gal/bucket = 3 buckets (ceil).
- Tape = 1000 sqft × 0.55 ft/sqft = 550 lineal feet; a single 500-ft roll plus a partial second roll = 2 rolls.
Slide ceiling fraction to 1.0 (all ceiling — garage conversion) on the same 1,000 sqft and the screw count rises to 32 sheets × 40 = 1,280 screws while mud and tape stay constant. Slide it to 0 (walls only) and screw count drops to 32 sheets × 32 = 1,024 screws. The calculator does this math live as you move the slider.
